zkSync is far ahead of Ethereum in monthly transaction volume thanks to inscriptions

zkSync, Ethereum’s Layer 2 scaling solution, recorded more transactions than the Ethereum mainnet in a period of one month, processing 34.67 million transactions in 30 days.

According to L2Beat’s data, a total of 34.16 million transactions were recorded on Ethereum’s mainnet during the same period . Next in line is Arbitrum, with 31.43 million transactions in the past 30 days.

The recent increase in trading volume on zkSync is attributed to the spread of inscriptions – a feature originally created on Bitcoin – to EVM networks, including most Layer 2 chains.

Data from L2Beat highlights that zkSync experienced its largest monthly transaction increase on December 16. That’s when the inscription feature was rolled out on the network and accounted for 4.6 million of the 5.3 million transactions. outbreak that day alone, according to Dune data.

Transactions related to inscriptions

zkSync operates as a Layer 2 network on the Ethereum mainnet. By bundling hundreds or thousands of transactions into a single cryptographic proof, it verifies transactions much faster and cheaper than the mainnet.

Since mid-December, inscription-related transactions have contributed to zkSync’s overall performance, helping it surpass both Ethereum and other layer 2s.

Inscriptions are embedded data found in transaction call data that, like Ordinals on Bitcoin, can be used to create tokens and NFTs. Such tokens include Ethscriptions on Ethereum, Doginals on Dogecoin, and Solana Inscriptions on Solana.
